Mastering Blues Guitar - Wayne Riker (8234) Book & CD
Mastering Blues Guitar - Wayne Riker (8234) Book & CD
This advanced method for blues guitarists is also a great method for rock players who want a blues edge. This book includes everything from blues to composite scales, the Mixolydian mode, arpeggio superimpositions, the eight-bar blues, gospel blues, minor blues and more. It also includes techniques and licks of the great players like Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Freddie King, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and many others. This is the most thorough method for electric blues guitar.

Teacher Review:
It is described as a complete blues guitar method at
the master level, with included CD for the TAB tracks.

It is well laid out in presentation, and states that the
reader can start-in anywhere within the text. The initial theory
review is comprehensive, yet is just a review. If one did not,
"get it", they could easily go farther on their own in that
particular area. It is important to me, that it touches on,
upfront, on cord building theory, scale relationships,
relative minor (circle of fifths), and keys.

It then digs right in from I, IV, V progression
variations in traditional open voicing to more
comprehensive riffs, and a few extended intro
snippets. When one is done with this 143 page book,
they could pull off a 45 min set of at a minimum
"faked" blues.

What I like especially about this blues method
edition is that after faithfully learning any number
of ones favorite blues tunes, one could make that
tune their own and at least double that 3-4 min old
vinyl cut.

I would recommend this book, in particular to an
advanced person who has already gotten into noodling
around with the Pentatonic Blues Scale a bit. A
beginner or intermediate might not "get it" for what
is has to offer and is trying to convey. Not that
it is difficult material though. But, an advanced
player will get ideas, and at least inspired to
attempt more extended improvisation. It is different
from the other blues texts I have seen.

I would recommend that reader in conjunction with
this book, pick up a copy of a fretboard logic or
pattern book, and a chops building shred method book.
It will make this study concentration much more
enjoyable, if not musical.
